Second suspect arrested in Durban trafficking probe linked to businessman

A second suspect has been arrested in a human trafficking case that involves a Durban businessman, authorities confirmed. The 48-year-old handed himself in to police and faces charges including trafficking in persons, sexual assault and kidnapping.

Arrest and court process

The Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation said the man handed himself over at the Durban North Police Station on Thursday, August 13. He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

How the case began

KZN Hawks spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase said the matter stems from a 2022 rescue of four young women from Eldorado Park, Johannesburg.

“The case stems from a 2022 rescue of four young women from Eldorado Park, Johannesburg, who were lured with a fake SIM card job opportunity and were later forced into sexual exploitation at a Durban North property,”

The investigation has focused on alleged recruitment by false job offers and subsequent sexual exploitation at a property in Durban North.

Main suspect and related charges

The main suspect is a 65-year-old Durban businessman. He cannot be named yet in terms of a court order because he has not pleaded to a sexual assault charge. The businessman was arrested on August 11 on a J50 warrant of arrest and faces 20 charges, including trafficking in persons, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Following a brief first appearance, the businessman’s matter was adjourned and he was taken to Westville Prison Hospital. He is expected to apply for bail on August 25.

Investigation status

Authorities have linked the two arrests to the 2022 rescue and continue to pursue the trafficking investigation. Court processes for the suspects are ongoing.
