Rare pangolin arrives in Joburg after remarkable rescue effort

A rare Temminck’s pangolin rescued during a Western Cape sting operation has arrived in Johannesburg for specialist treatment after a chain of compassionate acts turned a Mandela Day rescue into a race against time.

Percival, one of the world’s most trafficked mammals, was recovered by the Malmesbury Stock Theft Unit before conservation teams mobilised to give him the best chance of survival.

A journey powered by compassion

According to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (JWVH), CapeNature Environmental Management Inspector Asgar Vahed immediately responded to the call for help despite being on leave. Working closely with the hospital’s veterinary team, he cared for the distressed pangolin while searching for emergency veterinary assistance.

Veterinarian Dr Lynne Klug accepted the unexpected case and provided emergency stabilisation in consultation with the JWVH team. After around 12 hours of monitoring, conservationists determined that Percival required specialist care in Johannesburg as soon as possible.

Airlink and Impact for Wildlife then stepped in to transport both Vahed and Percival to Johannesburg, where the pangolin is now receiving specialist treatment.

The rescue unfolded as South Africans marked Mandela Day, highlighting the power of collective action in wildlife conservation. The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital said the rescue reflected the spirit of the day, with law enforcement officers, veterinarians, conservationists, airline staff and pilots all contributing their time and expertise to save one of the planet’s most endangered mammals.

Temminck’s pangolins face severe pressure from illegal wildlife trafficking, making every successful rescue an important step in protecting the species. Percival’s condition has not yet been publicly updated, though his arrival at the specialist facility marks the beginning of the next stage in his recovery.
