Seven hantavirus cases linked to Dutch ship MV Hondius; three deaths reported

The World Health Organization (WHO) says seven hantavirus cases are connected to the cruise ship MV Hondius, which is anchored off Praia, Cape Verde. The cluster includes two confirmed infections and five suspected cases, and authorities have reported three deaths in total.

Who is affected

WHO confirmed that the 69-year-old Dutch woman who died in a Johannesburg hospital after becoming ill aboard the ship tested positive for hantavirus. She had previously been listed among the suspected cases. The other confirmed case is a British passenger who is in intensive care in Johannesburg.

Among the suspected cases is a 69-year-old Dutch man, the husband of the confirmed Dutch woman, who died on April 11 aboard the ship after developing fever and respiratory symptoms. Dutch reporting indicates he was the first to show symptoms.

Other suspected cases and current situation on board

Authorities have identified additional suspected cases, including a deceased German woman whose body remains on board. Other passengers and crew members have been reported as ill. Two crew members one Dutch and one British remain on the ship and require urgent medical care.

All passengers have been tested, although results have not yet been released.

Response and coordination

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is examining options to evacuate a small number of people from the vessel. The Netherlands is coordinating the response because the MV Hondius is Dutch-flagged.

Where the ship is located

The ship is anchored off Praia, Cape Verde. WHO reported the case count and status of the confirmed infections and suspected cases.

Health status summary

  • Seven cases linked to the ship (two confirmed, five suspected)
  • Three people have died
  • Two confirmed infections: a Dutch woman (died in Johannesburg) and a British passenger (in intensive care)
  • All passengers tested; results pending

The situation remains active as authorities coordinate testing, medical care and possible evacuations. Investigations and response efforts are continuing under Dutch coordination.
