Missing Durban woman found safe as family slams social media rumours

Durban woman Torell Abrahams has been found safe and unharmed after a week-long search, with her family speaking out against rumours and speculation that circulated on social media during her disappearance.

The 30-year-old’s safe return was announced in a Facebook post shared by the community group Wentworth Lives Matter on Thursday, 15 October.

The search involved community members, social media influencers and MK Party ward councillor Christopher Enicker. However, no further details have been shared about where Abrahams was found or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

Her family has asked for privacy following the ordeal.

Torell Abrahams went missing after leaving work

Abrahams was last seen on 8 October after leaving a construction site in Umbilo, where she worked as a safety officer.

She reportedly contacted her father to say she would be using an e-hailing service to travel home. This was the last known contact her family had with her.

During the search, unverified claims circulated online alleging that she had been kidnapped by an Uber driver.

Missing Persons South Africa reportedly stated that her cellphone had been traced to the Ndwendwe area, while a missing-persons enquiry was opened at Umbilo police station.

A reward of R10,000 was also offered for information that could help bring her home safely.

Family responds to social media rumours

Following the news of her return, Abrahams’ aunt, Rochelle Abrahams, addressed the speculation and public commentary surrounding the case.

She said the experience had been traumatic for the family and expressed gratitude to those who had helped search for her niece.

“My niece is FOUND SAFE. This was traumatic for our family. We are extremely happy to have our girl home,” she wrote.

Rochelle also rejected claims circulating online about what had happened to Abrahams.

“Torell was not on a spree. Torell was not kidnapped. We give thanks to GOD and everyone of you who came out and showed just how much Tori is loved,” she added.

The family has not shared further details about the circumstances surrounding Abrahams’ disappearance and return.

Missing woman’s return sparks discussion about e-hailing safety

Abrahams’ disappearance prompted concern among social media users, with some discussions focusing on the safety of using e-hailing services.

Her case also drew attention as another missing-person search was under way in the Eastern Cape. Fourteen-year-old Allegra Styles from Gqeberha was reportedly found after a five-day search.

However, the circumstances of the two cases are separate, and claims about Abrahams’ disappearance should not be treated as confirmed without verified information.

For her family, the immediate priority is her safe return and the opportunity to recover from what they described as a traumatic experience.
