tarynThe Proteas fast bowling lineup is under severe strain as injuries continue to deplete their resources ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy. Gerald Coetzee’s withdrawal from the SA20 over the weekend compounds an already challenging situation.
Although South Africa’s talent pool in fast bowling is abundant, the current fitness issues cast doubt on their readiness for the high-stakes tournament next month.
Coetzee and Nortje Out
Anrich Nortje was recently ruled out of both the SA20 and the Champions Trophy due to a back injury, a decision made just days after his initial inclusion in the tournament squad. Coetzee, initially seen as Nortje’s natural replacement, has also been sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained during the SA20 while playing for the Joburg Super Kings.
Despite this setback, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has not entirely ruled Coetzee out of contention for the Champions Trophy, though his inclusion would be a gamble given his recovery timeline.
Other Injury Concerns
Several other fast bowlers remain unavailable:
Baartman has shown promise in the SA20 with five wickets in four games for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, while Ngidi has taken just one wicket in three matches for the Paarl Royals.
Selection Dilemma
Ngidi is already in the Champions Trophy squad, but Baartman may now emerge as a potential inclusion, depending on his performance and fitness by the tournament’s end. The Proteas face a nervous wait to see how their fast-bowling ranks fare in the remaining SA20 fixtures.
As the Champions Trophy draws closer, the Proteas’ management will need to carefully weigh fitness and form to field a competitive pace attack.
