Blitzboks Begin Perth Campaign with Fresh Determination After Historic Cape Town Victory

The Springbok Sevens team, fresh off their historic victory as HSBC SVNS Cape Town champions, arrived in Perth ready to start anew. Co-captain Impi Visser emphasized the team’s mindset of starting from scratch despite their triumph at home—their first since 2015.
According to Visser, the Cape Town win was a testament to hard work, but the Blitzboks understand that the season’s success hinges on consistent performance. “We have set a standard for ourselves, and now we aim to maintain and raise it,” he said. The Cape Town victory saw the Blitzboks secure 30 points, placing them fourth in the HSBC SVNS standings. Head coach Philip Snyman reminded the team that the Cape Town win was just the beginning. “We can’t think the season is made. We need to put it behind us and focus on what lies ahead,” Snyman said.
Visser highlighted the cohesion within the experienced squad, which welcomes back Ryan Oosthuizen, Ronald Brown, and Selvyn Davids. These seasoned players replaced Mfundo Ndhlovu, Shaun Williams, and Tristan Leyds. Zain Davids is also set to celebrate his 50th HSBC SVNS tournament cap.
The Blitzboks are slated to face tough pool matches against the US, Australia, and Argentina. Visser noted, “All our opponents have strengths and weaknesses. We perform best when we focus on our own game.”
As they prepare to kick off their campaign on Friday morning against the US, Visser expressed appreciation for the South African expat community’s support in Perth. “Wherever we play, South Africans come out in numbers to support us. It’s a great inspiration.”
The Blitzboks’ schedule:
- Friday: US (8:23 am), Australia (1:52 pm)
- Saturday: Argentina (7:50 am), followed by knockout rounds
Can the Blitzboks sustain their momentum and claim back-to-back titles? All eyes are on them as they aim to raise the bar even higher.
