A South African mother has spoken out about her daughter’s frightening experience on Roblox and urged other parents to know who their children are talking to and what they are doing online.

Mother goes public to warn other parents

According to IOL, Ilanza Klein decided to speak publicly after long consideration, saying she hoped sharing the story might protect other children. Klein told the publication she had been debating whether to go public because the incident involved her daughter and was difficult for the family to revisit.

Concerns about hidden risks on a child-focused platform

According to IOL, Klein retained evidence and personally saw conversations and behaviour that concerned her, including what she described as adults targeting and interacting with children through the platform.

Why identities can be misleading

According to IOL, Klein warned that children may believe they are playing with peers and have no reliable way of knowing who is behind a username or avatar.

“Children can believe they are simply playing a game with another child. They don’t necessarily understand who may actually be behind a username, an avatar or a friendly conversation. That innocence can be exploited.”

Expert advice on platform risks and parental controls

According to IOL, Emma Sadleir, founder of The Digital Law Company, highlighted risks for children on Roblox including user-generated content, scams, messaging, virtual purchases and the risk of sexual predators using online communication to build relationships with minors.

According to IOL, Sadleir recommended that parents use the platform’s safety features and take an active interest in their children’s online activity, suggesting measures such as parental controls, privacy settings, spending limits and chat restrictions.

A firm stance at home

According to IOL, Klein said she was not seeking attention and was not making accusations lightly; protecting her daughter’s privacy remained a priority and she was not ready to disclose every detail. Klein said the experience had changed how she viewed online safety and parenting, and she told IOL,

“Roblox will never be allowed in our home again.”

Takeaway for parents

According to IOL, Klein urged parents not to assume a platform is safe because it is marketed to children and to be proactive about knowing who their children are talking to and what kinds of interactions they are having online.
