Katlehong parents on high alert after children reportedly hurt

Parents in Moleleki Extension 2 are being urged to keep a close eye on their children after a disturbing, yet unverified, account began circulating on social media this week, describing an alleged incident involving three young children at Lagos Park, Joburg Etc reports.

What the family says happened

According to a post shared by community page Katlehong News & Info K1, a parent came forward with an account involving three children, all aged approximately seven, who were reportedly playing at Lagos Park when they were allegedly approached by three unidentified men.

The children were reportedly grabbed, their mouths covered, and taken to an area near the river known locally as Emasimini. According to the family’s account, the children told relatives that their fingers had been cut and that blood was collected in a bottle. One child reportedly managed to escape while the other two were allegedly left behind before eventually making their way home.

The children are said to have walked from Block E to Block D with blood on their hands before their families rushed them to Ramokonopi Clinic for treatment.

It’s important to stress that none of these details have been independently verified, and Joburg Etc has reached out to the South African Police Service (SAPS) for an official statement. This article will be updated once a response is received.

Why the case has been difficult to take further

The family says they struggled to take the matter further with police because the children, given their age, could not provide clear descriptions of the alleged perpetrators. This is a common and well-documented challenge in cases involving very young witnesses, and it’s one of the reasons such reports are so difficult to confirm or dismiss outright.

A community on edge

The post has spread quickly through local WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages, with the page’s own caption, ‘We might have a satanic cult within our hood’ – stoking fear well beyond Moleleki Extension 2. Residents commenting on the original post have shared their own anxieties about letting children play unsupervised, with several calling for heightened neighbourhood watch activity around Lagos Park and the riverside area.

It’s worth noting that claims involving so-called satanic cults targeting children have surfaced periodically in communities across South Africa over the years, often spreading faster than they can be confirmed by police. That history doesn’t make this particular report untrue, but it’s a reason for communities to stay alert without jumping to conclusions before authorities have had a chance to investigate.

What residents are being urged to do

Katlehong News & Info K1 has urged parents and guardians to:

  • Always know where your children are playing
  • Avoid letting young children play far from adult supervision
  •  Report any suspicious activity near Lagos Park or the river area to SAPS immediately

The page described children’s safety as ‘a shared community responsibility’, a sentiment echoed by several commenters calling for more visible policing and street lighting around the area.
