The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a firm warning to the public against sharing a viral WhatsApp message calling for a province-wide shutdown in Gauteng on Monday, 26 May 2025.

The message, which calls for highway blockades, school closures, and even the shutdown of the American embassy and certain food outlets, has been labelled as fake and inflammatory by the National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola.

According to General Masemola, the message is nothing more than a fear-mongering hoax aimed at creating panic and inciting unlawful behaviour. “We urge all South Africans to ignore and stop forwarding this message. It is not based on any credible threat and only serves to bully communities into fear,” he said.

To reassure the public, General Masemola confirmed that all services in Gauteng—including schools, businesses, and public transport—will continue as usual. There will be no road closures or shutdowns, and major motorways such as the N1 (Sandton and Pretoria routes), M1, and M2 will remain open.

Law enforcement agencies across the province, including the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD), Ekurhuleni Metro Police (EMPD), traffic authorities, and private security firms, are fully mobilized to ensure peace and order.

“We will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or intimidation,” Masemola stated. “Anyone found breaking the law will be dealt with swiftly.”

The SAPS has called on communities to reject unlawful activity and work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of all residents. “It’s in the best interest of everyone in Gauteng to say no to chaos and yes to the rule of law,” he added.

The police remain on high alert, ready to respond to any disruptions, though none are anticipated. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and not be swayed by misinformation circulating on social media.
