Man Arrested for Threatening Ramaphosa and Cape Town Mayor to Appear in Court

Johannesburg — On Monday, a 28-year-old man who was detained in Germiston for threatening Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, President Cyril Ramaphosa, and a prominent businesswoman will appear in court for the first time.
After an investigation by the Hawks’ Cape Town CATS unit, the suspect was taken into custody last Friday. He is charged with sending several threatening messages to the businesswoman’s family, the mayor, and the president. Before the Western Cape Magistrates Court hearing, his identity is kept secret.
The case was first reported in early May, and Hawks spokesperson Thandi Mbambo confirmed the quick arrest. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on May 26, 2025, after being charged with intimidation.
Scebi Thabiso Nene, a KwaZulu-Natal resident, was recently given a five-year prison sentence in a related case. He was found guilty of disseminating manipulated pornographic pictures that included the faces of Ramaphosa, former Police Minister Bheki Cele, and Cele’s spouse. The Pietermaritzburg Regional Court found Nene guilty of violating the Cybercrimes Act.
These incidents demonstrate the increased focus South African law enforcement is placing on threats and cybercrimes directed at public figures.
