Fifteen years after it first reshaped Durban’s skyline, the Moses Mabhida Stadium is getting a bold R240 million facelift, and it’s set to change how locals and visitors experience the city.

Since its debut for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the stadium has stood as a landmark of national pride. But after more than a decade of wear, Durban is now investing in both major repairs and bold new attractions, blending structural integrity with tourist innovation.

R240 Million Vision for Durban’s Crown Jewel

Announced by the City of eThekwini in late 2024, the stadium’s refurbishment is not just about fixing what’s old; it’s about reimagining what’s possible.

New features include a larger viewing platform with a cantilevered glass “air walk,” a fully redesigned sky car accessible to all visitors, an upgraded Big Swing, and a thrilling new zip line that ends in People’s Park. The goal is to create a world-class adventure and entertainment space that keeps the Moses Mabhida Stadium central to Durban’s tourism economy.

Critical Repairs Behind the Scenes

Alongside the flashy new features, the city is tackling pressing safety issues.

The first round of emergency repairs is already complete. These included replacing damaged roof membranes, treating steel corrosion, restoring the arch cladding, improving drainage systems, and removing old infrastructure linked to the sky car.

However, during a Community Services Committee meeting on 17 July 2025, the city formally requested an extension of the repair project to complete outstanding work. This includes emergency rehabilitation of concrete and roof structures, fixing compromised mechanical joints, and reinforcing the stadium’s iconic arch.

The extension, pending council approval, will ensure that safety and international standards remain a priority while still delivering the planned attractions.

What to Expect: Features That Elevate the Experience

Here’s a taste of what visitors can look forward to when the revamped Moses Mabhida Stadium is complete:

  • Enhanced Viewing Platform: Now 60% larger, with a cantilevered glass floor for a dramatic “air walk.”

  • Sky Car 2.0: Longer travel time and full accessibility for those with disabilities.

  • Big Swing Revamp: Easier access to the launch platform for thrill-seekers.

  • New Zip Line: Ending at People’s Park, ideal for adventure with a post-ride snack.

  • Compression Ring Walk: Offering 360-degree panoramic views and sea-facing bungee jump options.

  • New Lighting Upgrades: Reinforced bowl and arch lighting with colour-customisation options.

Public Reactions: Hope and Hype

Local response to the upgrade has been mostly positive, with many Durban residents excited about what it means for tourism and events.

Social media has been buzzing with hopeful comments like “This could bring big shows and global events back to Durban” and “It’s about time Moses Mabhida got some love!”

There are also a few questions about budget transparency and timelines, natural concerns for any public works project of this scale, but the overall tone remains optimistic.

Looking Ahead

The city has committed to ongoing updates as the project progresses. If the extension is approved, construction will continue through 2025, with strict oversight to ensure safety and compliance.

When complete, the Moses Mabhida Stadium won’t just be repaired; it’ll be reimagined as one of South Africa’s top experiential landmarks, ready to host major events, dazzle tourists, and thrill locals for decades to come.
