“Wrong Place, Wrong Time?” Kenny Kunene Caught Up in DJ Sumbody Murder Drama

MMC says it was journalism. The DA says it’s a joke. The public’s left wondering: who’s really driving the city?

In a city where truth and politics often collide, Johannesburg finds itself grappling with another political firestorm — this time involving one of its most flamboyant and controversial leaders: Kenny Kunene.

The man once dubbed the “Sushi King,” now serving as the City of Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport and deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), is being called on to resign after police found him at the home of alleged murder mastermind Katiso “KT” Molefe, the man accused of orchestrating the 2022 killing of beloved musician DJ Sumbody.

And Kunene’s explanation? He says he was just playing chauffeur for a journalist.

The Arrest That Sparked a Storm

On Monday, police descended on a Sandton mansion to arrest Molefe in connection with the brutal assassination of Oupa John Sefoka, better known as DJ Sumbody. The drive-by shooting, which occurred in Woodmead in November 2022, left the artist and another individual dead, with a third person seriously wounded.

While the arrest itself marked a breakthrough in the long-running murder investigation, it was who the police found at the property that raised eyebrows and hackles.

Kunene, dressed in what many assumed was casual wear for the day, wasn’t there for a party or business. According to him, he was simply “facilitating” an interview for a young journalist from his media outlet, Africa News Global.

The DA: “You Expect Us to Believe That?”

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Johannesburg caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, isn’t buying it.

“Criminality and underworld links seem to be entrenched in the Patriotic Alliance,” she said. “Kunene’s role as MMC for Transport is absolutely untenable. The DA calls for his immediate resignation. If he doesn’t resign, Mayor Dada Morero must fire him.”

She didn’t mince words about Kunene’s defence either.

“The explanation is laughable and must be rejected out of hand. The people of Johannesburg do not deserve the underworld connections that Kenny Kunene brings to the mayoral committee in their city.”

Her statement has since gone viral on social media, with hashtags like #KuneneMustGo and #DJJustice trending as users debated whether his excuse was legitimate or simply political theatre.

“How can we trust our transport MMC to fix potholes if he’s busy facilitating interviews with alleged hitmen?” one X user asked.
Another quipped: “Journalism my foot. Kenny’s always in the middle of drama like it’s a reality show.”

Kunene Defends His Actions

Speaking to eNCA, Kunene was adamant that there was no wrongdoing on his part.

“It was basically to give the man the opportunity to speak about where he stands,” he said, referring to Molefe. “There is nothing wrong with interviewing suspects.”

Kunene argued that media houses like Newzroom Afrika have sought out interviews with accused criminals before, including controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

“These are young journalists,” he added. “This would have been a great exclusive for them.”

The Bigger Picture: Politics and Perception

Whether or not Kunene’s story holds up legally, politically it’s already doing damage. For many residents, this isn’t just about an arrest or a poorly timed visit. It’s about who we allow to lead our cities and what kind of company they keep.

The Patriotic Alliance has long styled itself as the party of the people, particularly those fed up with the ANC-DA tug-of-war. But Kunene’s presence at the home of a man facing charges for one of South Africa’s most shocking celebrity murders undermines the party’s message of law, order and clean governance.

What Happens Next?

As of Tuesday afternoon, the DA is standing firm in its demand: Kunene must resign or be removed.

Meanwhile, police are staying quiet about the details surrounding Molefe’s case, though sources confirm that more arrests could follow. The public awaits further developments, in both the courtroom and the mayor’s office.

For now, Kenny Kunene is still in office, but Johannesburg’s trust in his leadership may be running on empty.

Culture Watch: Who Was DJ Sumbody?

DJ Sumbody, known for hits like Ayepyep and Monate Mpolaye, was more than just a party-starter. He was a cultural icon who redefined Pretoria’s club scene and helped launch amapiano into the mainstream. His murder shocked the nation and left fans reeling, a tragedy many say still demands full justice.

Public Reaction:

“We want leaders, not celebs playing politics.”
“Kunene always finds the camera. But where is the leadership?”
“Justice for DJ Sumbody. Full stop.”

As the city buzzes with questions, one thing is clear: In the world of Joburg politics, being at the wrong place at the wrong time might just be the right place to start asking tough questions.
