Lebeya tells Madlanga he was summoned to Molefe raid by ‘Malcom X’, denies knowing suspect

Former Hawks boss Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya has told the Madlanga Commission that he did not know Katiso “KT” Molefe and that he was summoned to Molefe’s Sandhurst home by an individual known as Malcom X.

Lebeya flatly denied playing any role in the arrest of Molefe, saying he did not even know the man. His testimony to the commission focused on why he was present at the Sandhurst residence during the 2024 Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) raid.

According to the commission record, Lebeya said he was brought to Molefe’s Sandhurst home after being contacted by an individual known as Malcom X. The account raises questions about who summoned the former Hawks head to the high-profile operation.

The commission heard that Lebeya allegedly triggered the deployment of multiple Hawks units to Molefe’s Sandhurst mansion during the 2024 arrest operation being carried out by other police elements. Testimony described the deployment as creating a potential for a standoff and suggested a breakdown in coordination, with units operating without a clear understanding of each other’s movements and intentions.

Possible escalation

Witnesses told the commission the deployment could have escalated into violence because police personnel were effectively operating in the dark about one another at the scene.
