From high-end smartphones to heartfelt pledges, McKenzie’s latest financial disclosure says more about character than currency

In the often murky world of politics, where wealth and power quietly cross paths, transparency isn’t just welcomed—it’s demanded. And few politicians lean into that demand as boldly as Gayton McKenzie, the leader of the Patriotic Alliance and Member of Parliament.

In his latest entry into the June 2025 Register of Members’ Interests, McKenzie opened his books to the public. While there were no shock revelations about secret offshore accounts or side hustles, what emerged instead was a portrait of a man who continues to challenge the mold of the typical South African politician.

What Was (and Wasn’t) on the List

McKenzie declared no shares, no consulting gigs, no outside income, and no rented property or trust funds. In the economic engine room of Parliament, where double-dipping is not uncommon, that stood out. His register reflects no corporate entanglements or business roles only one immovable asset: a residential property in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, spread over nearly 1,500 square meters.

But then came the curveballs. McKenzie listed several luxury gifts, including a R38,000 Honor Magic V2 smartphone from a tech company in Shenzhen, China, and a R6,000 teacup and saucer from the Russian Cultural Ministry. From the Indian Cultural Ministry in Brazil, he received a framed artwork embedded with 99.9% gold foil, still awaiting valuation.

And just like that, a teacup sparked national curiosity.

“I Don’t Need Government Money”

The gifts themselves might seem extravagant, but context is everything.

McKenzie has spent years building a brand around financial independence. He’s not shy about reminding critics that he doesn’t live off taxpayer money and refuses government perks.

Back in 2023, while stepping down as mayor of the Central Karoo Municipality, he declared:

“I never had to use a cent from this municipality throughout my term. I took no salary and no perks whatsoever.”

That promise wasn’t just lip service. He famously donated his entire salary, funded his own bodyguards, and covered all travel and accommodation out of pocket. It was a stance few local leaders have taken and stuck with.

A Business Past, But No Present Ties

Before entering the political space full time, McKenzie had a sprawling presence across various industries. From mining and beverage production to logistics and film, he held directorships in more than 20 companies. Almost all of them are now de-registered.

These past ventures included names like Afrobrew Beverages, Raystar Productions, and Dirbyn Publications—a mix of ambitious startups and passion projects. Whether these companies were profitable or not, they showcased a drive for entrepreneurship long before he became a household political name.

A Million-Rand Pledge and a Missing Girl

If there’s one thing that continues to cement McKenzie’s public persona, it’s his willingness to part with money when it counts.

In March 2025, he offered a R1 million reward from his personal funds for the safe return of Joshlin Smith, a six-year-old girl who went missing in Saldanha Bay. The case shocked the nation, and McKenzie’s response struck a deeply emotional chord.

“What is bigger than politics is finding that green-eyed girl,” he said at the time, adding that he was willing to sacrifice campaign resources, posters, t-shirts, diesel for the sake of this one life.

That gesture led many on social media to crown him “the conscience of Parliament.”

Public Reaction: Integrity or Image?

Social media has been split down the middle. While some see the luxury gifts as a contradiction to his message of service and humility, others argue that McKenzie’s actions speak louder than any imported teacup.

“Say what you want about the man, but when was the last time your MP gave away their entire salary?” one X user wrote.

Critics, however, question the intent behind such disclosures. “Is it transparency, or just PR?” another user posted.

Still, the facts remain: McKenzie isn’t just talking the talk, he’s putting his money, quite literally, where his mouth is.

More Than a Declaration

Gayton McKenzie’s 2025 financial declaration is less about numbers and more about narrative. It’s a story of a man navigating the uneasy space between politics, personal wealth, and public accountability.

The Honor phone, the gold-foiled artwork, the teacup, these gifts may grab headlines. But it’s the million-rand reward for a missing child and a salary pledged to a foundation for the vulnerable that reveal the character behind the politician.

In an era of dodgy tenders and dodged questions, South Africa may not need its leaders to be poor. But it does need them to be clear. And in that respect, love him or hate him, McKenzie is making sure his declaration speaks volumes.
