Two children among eight killed in head-on crash on N17 in Mpumalanga

Eight people, including two children, died after a head-on collision between a Toyota and a Volkswagen on the N17 near Ermelo in Mpumalanga. The crash took place on the N17 toll road between Ermelo and Davel in the early hours of Sunday, reportedly at around 1:30 am.

What happened

Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said seven of the victims were travelling in the Volkswagen sedan, and the eighth victim was the sole occupant and driver of the Toyota sedan. He said no further injuries were recorded.

“Seven of the victims were occupants in the VW sedan, while the eighth victim was the driver of the Toyota sedan, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash. No further injuries were recorded.”

Response and investigation

Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the collision. The cause was unknown at the time of reporting, and Mpumalanga officials said reckless and negligent driving could not be ruled out.

“An investigation has already commenced.”

Official reaction

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jackie Macie urged motorists to take greater care on the roads and to adjust driving to conditions. He offered condolences to the families of those killed.

“Motorists must obey the rules of the road and adjust their driving in line with prevailing weather and road conditions. Greater vigilance is a must, especially when visibility is affected,” Macie stated.
