Pinetown robbery erupts into midday gunfight

What started as a brazen daylight house robbery in Paradise Valley, Pinetown, ended in the sound of gunfire on Tuesday afternoon when police intercepted the fleeing suspects.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, officers were responding to reports of an active house robbery on Oxford Road when they spotted a white VW Polo heading in the opposite direction. The driver ignored police instructions to stop and sped away, triggering a high-speed chase through the suburb.

High-speed pursuit ends in gun battle

The pursuit ended on Underwood Road when, instead of surrendering, the suspects opened fire on the police. Officers returned fire, wounding all four occupants of the vehicle. Emergency responders treated the men at the scene before they were taken to the hospital under police guard.

Stolen goods and firearms seized

A search of the vehicle revealed stolen items from the robbery, including two firearms, a flatscreen television, jewellery, luxury handbags, and various home appliances. Police believe the group may be linked to other recent crimes in the area.

One suspect managed to escape during the chaos, and a manhunt is now underway. The injured suspects are expected to appear in court once they have recovered sufficiently to face charges.

Linked to other violent incidents

This incident comes just weeks after a separate shootout in KwaDabeka, also in KwaZulu-Natal, where police exchanged gunfire with a gang linked to multiple violent crimes, including murder in Inanda. In that confrontation, one suspect was killed and two others injured, while police recovered four firearms and ammunition.

Community and police response

While Pinetown residents expressed relief that the suspects were stopped before they could strike again, the frequency of such armed confrontations has stirred renewed debate about crime prevention in KwaZulu-Natal. Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately, reminding residents that quick calls from the community can be the difference between a crime in progress and an arrest.
