The Betway Premiership weekend brought no shortage of drama, late winners, and table-shaking surprises. From Bradley Grobler’s heroics in Polokwane to Richards Bay’s upset in Stellenbosch, South Africa’s top-flight football served up a storybook round of action.

Sundowns Flex Their Muscle Against Durban City

The champions reminded everyone why they remain the team to beat. Durban City shocked Mamelodi Sundowns with an early header from Joslin Kamatuka, but Marcelo Allende and Tashreeq Mathews quickly flipped the script before half-time.

Iqraam Rayners then sealed the 3-1 win in the second half with his fifth goal of the season. Ronwen Williams’ penalty save against Kamatuka proved a turning point, and Sundowns fans were quick to salute their captain online for “changing the game with one hand.”

The victory cuts Sekhukhune’s lead at the top to a single point, setting up a thrilling race for the Premiership crown.

Grobler Delivers For High-Flying Sekhukhune

At the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Sekhukhune United fans had to wait until the dying seconds before erupting in celebration. Veteran striker Bradley Grobler, a new arrival with plenty of pedigree, showed his killer instinct with a stoppage-time finish that broke Golden Arrows’ resistance and sealed a 1-0 win.

Babina Noko’s faithful hailed the result online, with fans praising Grobler’s “never-say-die” mentality. The win keeps Sekhukhune at the summit of the league, now four points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns, adding to whispers that the Polokwane side might just be building a genuine title challenge.

Richards Bay End Stellies’ Slide

Over in Stellenbosch, frustration is boiling. Stellies dominated possession but couldn’t turn it into goals. Instead, Siyabonga Nzama struck for Richards Bay just before half-time, giving the KwaZulu-Natal side a shock 1-0 win.

For Richards Bay, the victory was massive, halting a poor run and lifting them to mid-table safety. For Stellenbosch, it marked a fourth straight loss, sparking anger among fans who flooded social media with calls for sharper finishing and bolder changes from coach Steve Barker.

Nurkovic’s Red Sees Magesi Punish Siwelele

At Seshego Stadium, tempers flared. Serbian striker Samir Nurkovic saw red for violent conduct in the first half, leaving Siwelele down to ten men. Magesi FC wasted no time capitalising. Delano Abrahams struck just before the break, before Thabang Sibanyoni doubled the lead in the 72nd minute to seal a 2-0 victory.

For coach John Maduka’s Magesi, this was a statement win in their fight for survival, lifting them into 11th place. Siwelele, however, are left languishing near the bottom, with pressure now mounting on coach Lehlohonolo Seema.

Orbit And Gallants Share The Spoils

In Rustenburg, Orbit College and Marumo Gallants played out a 1-1 stalemate. Thuso Moleleki’s opener gave Orbit early hope, but Christopher Sithole’s cross-turned-goal levelled things up in the second half.

Both teams pushed for a winner, with Gallants’ Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo denied late on by Orbit goalkeeper Sabelo Nkomo. The draw keeps Orbit rooted to the bottom, while Gallants remain stuck in mid-table after yet another 1-1 result their third in a row.

Weekend Recap

This weekend reminded South African football fans why the Betway Premiership is one of the most unpredictable leagues on the continent: late drama, red cards, underdog wins, and heavyweight responses all packed into 90 minutes.
