City Power schedules maintenance outages across Joburg this week
City Power will carry out planned maintenance in Midrand and Roodepoort this week to strengthen the network, with outages on 12 and 18 August affecting local streets.
City Power has announced scheduled maintenance work that will interrupt electricity supply in parts of Johannesburg this week as the utility carries out repairs to ageing infrastructure ahead of winter demand.
When and where the outages will occur
The first interruption is planned at the Greenstone Hill Switching Station in Midrand on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, from 09:00 to 17:00. City Power said the outage is expected to affect Stone Close, Hereford Road, Stoneridge Drive and Emerald Boulevard.
A second outage is scheduled for the Strydom Street Switching Station in Roodepoort on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, where essential breaker maintenance will affect Strydom Street and parts of Witpoortjie.
Why the work is being done
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the activities target ageing equipment that requires servicing to reduce the risk of larger, unplanned outages.
“Planned maintenance is critical in ensuring that ageing infrastructure is serviced, faulty equipment is identified and replaced, and the risk of unplanned outages is reduced,” Mangena said.
Mangena added that the timing is linked to the additional strain cold weather places on the grid.
“These activities also help protect the network during periods of increased demand, particularly during the winter season when colder weather places additional pressure on electricity infrastructure,” he said.
Safety advice for residents
The utility urged customers to exercise caution during the interruptions, warning that power could be restored without notice.
“Customers are advised to treat all electrical supply points as live at all times during the interruption period, as power supply may be restored earlier than anticipated,” Mangena said.
He also recommended that residents disconnect electrical devices to avoid damage when supply returns.
“Customers are also encouraged to unplug appliances during the outage to avoid possible damage when electricity supply is restored,” Mangena said.
City Power thanked residents for their patience while the essential maintenance is undertaken to improve network reliability.
