For Kaizer Chiefs, the road to the finish line just got a lot steeper.
A frustrating night in Bloemfontein saw Amakhosi fall 2-0 to Siwelele FC, a result that not only halted their momentum but also opened the door for rivals circling just behind them on the Betway Premiership table. Now, with log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns up next, there is no time to dwell. It is about response, and quickly.
The damage was done early at Toyota Stadium. Goals from Tebogo Potsane and rising talent Siphesihle Jeza put Chiefs on the back foot before they could find any rhythm.
It was a performance that felt out of sync from the start. After a strong run that included five straight wins, Chiefs suddenly look like a side searching for answers again. The defeat marked their fifth in the league this season and extended their winless run to three matches.
For a team that had quietly built hope of climbing even higher up the table, the timing could not be worse.
Co-coach Cedric Kaze did not shy away from the challenge ahead. If anything, he sees the looming clash with Sundowns as the perfect opportunity to reset.
With four games left in the campaign, Chiefs are still chasing the best possible finish. But the margin for error is gone.
Kaze made it clear that the squad must approach the Sundowns fixture with the right mindset. Facing the league leaders is never easy, but it is also the kind of game that can redefine a team’s season.
One of the biggest concerns from the Bloemfontein loss was how easily Chiefs were opened up.
Kaze pointed to defensive lapses as a key issue, admitting it was a match where his side never really settled. In a title race or even a top-three chase, those kinds of performances can be costly.
The absence of key players also played a role. Midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu missed out through injury, while Bradley Cross was rested. Both have been influential in recent weeks, and their absence was felt in a team that lacked balance.
The challenge does not end with Sundowns.
After that blockbuster clash, Chiefs travel to Polokwane to face Sekhukhune United before hosting AmaZulu in another potentially decisive encounter. Each match carries weight, especially with AmaZulu now firmly back in the conversation for a top-three finish.
Kaze admitted that hopes of finishing second have taken a knock, but the focus remains on ending the season as strongly as possible.
There was no attempt to hide behind excuses. Not even the recent Soweto Derby was used as a reason for the dip in form.
Instead, Kaze described the defeat as simply an off night. In a long season, those happen. What matters now is how Chiefs respond.
And there may be no better test of that response than taking on Sundowns, a side that has set the benchmark in South African football this season.
For Amakhosi, redemption is not just about pride. It is about proving they still belong in the conversation at the top end of the table.
