Police in the Eastern Cape have arrested a 26-year-old suspect in connection with the death of a 24-year-old student in Central, Gqeberha. The arrest was made on Sunday, a day after the alleged murder.
According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 26 October 2025, at student accommodation on Strand Street.
“It is alleged that at approximately 04:00, the deceased and the suspect were involved in a fight inside the accommodation. The victim was later found in his room unresponsive,” Van Rensburg said. Emergency services were called, but the student was declared dead.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is facing a murder charge. He is set to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 October 2025.
Police have confirmed that the name of the deceased will be released once formal identification is complete. Investigators continue to gather evidence and speak to witnesses.
In a separate incident, Gauteng police are investigating the deaths of two women discovered on the side of the road in Mamelodi, Tshwane on Sunday. The women, aged 21 and 22, were found with gunshot wounds to the head.
A video circulated on social media showed the victims lying in Mahube Valley, prompting authorities to open a double murder investigation. Police are appealing to the public to provide any information via Crime Stop (0800 10111) or the MySAPS App.
The Eastern Cape and Gauteng incidents highlight ongoing concerns over student safety and public security. Police have urged residents and students to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The Eastern Cape student murder and the Gauteng double homicide are reminders of the urgent need for stronger security measures at student accommodations and public spaces. Authorities continue to work diligently to bring justice and reassure affected communities.
