Norway investigates former PM Thorbjorn Jagland over Epstein-linked corruption claims
Norway is facing a diplomatic and political headache after announcing that former Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland is under investigation for alleged corruption connected to disgraced US financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Jagland, who led Norway from 1996 to 1997, later held several high-profile international positions, including secretary-general of the Council of Europe (2009–2019) and chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee (2009–2015). His name now appears in documents released last week by US authorities from the Epstein estate.
Anti-corruption probe opens
The investigation was initiated by Okokrim, Norway’s anti-corruption agency, which requested the Foreign Ministry lift Jagland’s diplomatic immunity. Okokrim chief Pal Lonseth confirmed that the focus of the probe is whether Jagland received any gifts or favors in connection with his past roles.
The emails cited in the investigation suggest Jagland communicated with Epstein about his travels and social engagements. One message from May 2012 mentions “extraordinary girls” in Tirana, Albania, while another from January 2013 references plans to visit Epstein’s private Caribbean island with his family, including a line noting, “I can’t keep it going only with young women as you know.”
Jagland pushes back
Jagland has publicly denied any wrongdoing, describing the emails as “embarrassing jargon” and insisting they could be easily misinterpreted. He told Norwegian newspaper VG that he never visited Epstein’s properties without his wife and denied ever setting foot on Epstein’s island.
His lawyer, Anders Brosveet, said all relevant information would be submitted to investigators and expressed confidence in the outcome: “Based on what we have found so far, we are confident of the outcome.”
International and local reactions
The probe has already stirred debate across Norway, with political commentators questioning the former PM’s judgment and the broader implications for Norway’s diplomatic reputation. Social media users have been sharply divided some calling for transparency and full accountability, while others caution against jumping to conclusions based solely on provocative email language.
This case marks a rare instance where a high-ranking European political figure is directly linked to the Epstein scandal, highlighting how the US financier’s network continues to resonate globally.
A shadow over a distinguished career
Jagland’s career has spanned decades of national and international influence, from Nobel laureate selection to European diplomacy. The current investigation casts a spotlight not just on alleged corruption, but on the ethical responsibilities of leaders whose private interactions may intersect with figures notorious for criminal and unethical behavior.
Norwegian authorities have yet to set a timeline for the investigation, leaving both political observers and the public waiting to see whether this chapter will lead to legal consequences or simply a reputational dent for one of Norway’s most senior statesmen.
