A 33-year-old man from Driefontein village in Sekhukhune, Limpopo, escaped from four armed kidnappers in the early hours of Wednesday morning after being abducted from his home, assaulted, and driven across the provincial border into Mpumalanga.

The ordeal began around 11:30 pm on Tuesday in the Matlelerekeng policing area. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the victim was inside his shack with his wife and child when four unknown male suspects broke in. Two were armed with firearms.

Taken at Gunpoint

The suspects forcibly seized the victim and compelled him into a silver-grey Honda sedan. His traumatised wife managed to escape unharmed with their child.

While driving, the suspects allegedly assaulted the victim repeatedly, using a firearm. The motive for the kidnapping remains unknown.

A Desperate Escape

At some point during the journey, the vehicle stopped at Koedoespoort in Mpumalanga province. The victim seized the opportunity and fled.

He then walked through secluded routes through the night, covering an unknown distance on foot, until he safely reached his residence at about 3 am on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.

Upon arrival, he immediately alerted the police.

Investigation Underway

A kidnapping case was opened at Matlelerekeng police station and has since been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit for further investigation.

Police have urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation or lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact Investigating Officer Sergeant Ronny Hlakole on 076 998 7004, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111, the nearest police station, or use the My SAPS App.

A Survivor’s Story

The man’s escapethrough the dark, on foot, after being assaulted and driven to an unknown locationis a testament to survival instinct and sheer determination. His family, who watched him taken at gunpoint, now have him home.

But the suspects remain at large. And until they are caught, the question of why he was targetedand whether others are at riskremains unanswered.

Police are appealing to the public for help. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
