Makhadzi stranded in Botswana as promoter dispute over payment escalates
Makhadzi says she has been stuck in Botswana since Saturday and she wants South Africa to know about it, Joburg Etc reports.
The Limpopo-born musician says two men she did not know approached her in the middle of a performance and asked for her passport and vehicle. She was on her fourth song when her road manager signalled from the side of the stage. She slipped away while her dancers carried on and found the men waiting outside.
What Makhadzi says happened
The men told her they wanted to serve her with a letter. Makhadzi wanted to know who they were. ‘How do I trust you?’ she asked in a video shared online, pointing out that they wore no uniform.
She says they had no name tag, warrant or court order. All they had was a document containing conversations she had not yet read. She asked to continue the discussion at a police station. The claims have not been independently verified.
The promoter at the centre of the row
The dispute involves Botswana promoter Gilbert Seagile, who claims Makhadzi owes him around R60 000 from earlier work.
Reports fromBriefly News, tell it the other way round. They allege Seagile previously took P50 000 from Makhadzi, roughly R60 500. The two sums are almost identical, so the argument may come down to a single payment. That has not been confirmed, and accounts differ on who owes whom.
What DIRCO has said
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has stepped in. Clayson Monyela posted: ‘We are attending to this matter. An update will be provided.’ The post did not say what form that help will take.

Not the first Botswana headline
This is not the first time Makhadzi’s name has surfaced in a Botswana money dispute. Around the turn of 2022 and 2023, reports claimed a court matter linked to shows she allegedly missed there. She denied being arrested and said she had received no court papers, according to African News Agency.
That history gives the current standoff a backstory. It does not settle who is right today.
Mzansi reacts
Social media split quickly. One user gave Botswana 24 hours to get her home safely. Another urged Seagile to release her and let the legal process run its course.
Others were less sympathetic. Some argued that celebrities have been quiet on issues affecting ordinary South Africans and questioned why they should rally now. Mzansi rarely agrees on its stars, and this episode shows it again.
A warning for artists who perform abroad
Makhadzi is due to headline her One Woman Show in Polokwane on 24 December. A passport held by someone else makes any travel plan difficult, however big the stage.
The episode also raises practical questions for artists who take gigs across the border. Who holds the contract, and who is the legal contact in each country? What should a person expect when someone arrives to serve legal papers? Makhadzi asked for identification and paperwork, which are fair things to expect from anyone claiming legal authority.
