Gauteng set for wet and stormy Saturday before calmer Sunday

Gauteng residents are in for a soggy start to the weekend, with showers and possible thunderstorms forecast across Pretoria and Johannesburg on Saturday, according to the South African Weather Service (Saws). After a day of wet and stormy conditions, the province can expect calmer, clearer skies on Sunday.

Wet and unsettled Saturday

In Pretoria, Saws predicts showers and thundershowers throughout Saturday, starting in the early hours and continuing into the evening. Temperatures will hover between 20°C and 22°C, with high humidity levels of 80%–90% making the air feel heavier. Residents can expect up to 15mm of rain, with a 60% chance of precipitation. Light winds of roughly 9 km/h will shift from north-east in the morning to south-west by evening.

Johannesburg will see a similar pattern, with wet spells during the early morning and evening and partly cloudy conditions around midday. Temperatures are expected to reach a maximum of 26°C, starting at 18°C in the early morning. Rainfall is projected at 15mm, with the same 60% likelihood of showers.

Social media chatter among Gauteng residents has already reflected the frustration and humour often sparked by weekend rain. One Johannesburg resident jokingly tweeted: “Great, just when I thought my weekend plans could survive, the weather gods say no. #RainyJohannesburg.”

Clearer skies expected on Sunday

Sunday promises a welcome reprieve. Pretoria is forecast to see cloudy conditions in the morning, clearing to partly cloudy by evening, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 23°C and no rain expected. Johannesburg will follow a similar pattern, with morning clouds giving way to clearer skies, temperatures between 15°C and 21°C, and 0% chance of rainfall.

Saws notes that Sunday’s calmer weather should provide ideal conditions for outdoor activities after the stormy Saturday, giving Gauteng residents a chance to make up for any disrupted plans.

Local context and advice

Gauteng’s summer months often bring sudden, heavy showers and thunderstorms, which can cause localized flooding and traffic delays. Residents are advised to carry umbrellas, plan extra travel time, and monitor local flood-prone areas, particularly in low-lying streets and informal settlements.

The weekend’s forecast highlights how quickly weather in the province can change, with storms one day and clear skies the next, a pattern that has become a familiar part of life in South Africa’s economic hub.
