As tensions in the Middle East deepen, South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters has stepped firmly into the global conversation, taking a hardline stance against the United States’ military actions in Iran.

The party is not mincing its words. In a strongly worded response, the Red Berets have labelled the conflict “Trump’s war” and are now calling for former US President Donald Trump to face international prosecution.

A Resignation That Shifted The Narrative

At the centre of the controversy is the sudden resignation of Joseph Kent, who served as director of the US National Counterterrorism Centre.

In a letter that quickly gained attention, Kent challenged the justification for the war, stating that Iran did not pose an immediate threat to the United States. He also pointed to external pressure, suggesting that influence from Israel and its allies in the US played a role in pushing the country into conflict.

For the EFF, this letter was more than just an internal disagreement. The party described it as a revealing moment that exposes cracks within America’s intelligence and security structures.

EFF Labels The War “Illegal And Unjustified”

Building on Kent’s claims, the EFF has argued that the war lacks legitimacy and is rooted in misinformation. According to the party, the resignation strengthens concerns that the conflict was not only unnecessary but also harmful.

The party went further, citing reports of civilian casualties, including a deadly bombing of a school where 168 children were killed. These allegations, the EFF says, underline the human cost of the war and reinforce its call for accountability.

In its statement, the party framed the conflict as one of aggression rather than defence, insisting that responsibility must ultimately rest with Trump.

Calls For Global Accountability

The EFF has now urged that Trump be declared a war criminal and held accountable through international legal systems.

The party also believes South Africa should reconsider its diplomatic posture. It argued that the country should avoid engaging with the United States while simultaneously pursuing legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

This stance reflects a broader ideological position often taken by the EFF, which has consistently aligned itself with anti-imperialist narratives and has been vocal on issues involving Palestine and global power dynamics.

Trump Pushes Back On NATO Allies

On the other side, Trump has presented a very different version of events.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, he claimed that the United States had already achieved overwhelming military success in Iran. According to him, key elements of Iran’s military infrastructure, including its navy, air force, and leadership, have been effectively dismantled.

He also suggested that NATO countries had chosen not to participate in the conflict, despite agreeing that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons.

In a characteristically assertive tone, Trump insisted that the US did not need support from its allies, emphasising the country’s military strength and independence.

A Conflict With Global Implications

While the war itself is unfolding thousands of kilometres away, its ripple effects are being felt worldwide, including here in South Africa.

From rising geopolitical tensions to renewed debates about global power and accountability, the situation has sparked strong reactions across political lines. The EFF’s response highlights how international conflicts often resonate locally, shaping political discourse and foreign policy positions.

As the war continues, one thing is clear. This is no longer just a distant conflict. It is a global flashpoint, with voices from across the world weighing in on who is responsible and what justice should look like.
