Fuel Efficiency Now a Financial Lifeline: Top 10 Petrol and Diesel SUVs in SA

South Africans are facing renewed pressure at the pumps following the latest fuel price hike, placing greater strain on already stretched household budgets.

As of 1 April 2026 :

  • Petrol increased by R3.06 per litre

  • Diesel surged by between R7.37 and R7.51 per litre

Against this backdrop, fuel efficiency is rapidly moving up the list of priorities for consumers in the market for a new vehicle, particularly in the popular SUV segment where running costs can vary significantly.

The Math

Antoine Caradonna , founder of Vehicle SA, says fuel consumption has always been a key point of comparison, but is likely set to become a bigger driver of purchasing decisions.

“With fuel prices at current levels, every 1 L/100km saved over 15,000 km per year translates into roughly R3,900 in annual diesel savings. The difference between the most and least efficient SUV on this list adds up to R6,300 per year using the latest diesel price of R26.11 in Gauteng.”
