BMW recalls nearly 11,000 cars in South Africa over starter defect

Published

on

BMW South Africa is recalling 10,961 vehicles sold from 2016 onwards because of a fault affecting the Pinion Starter, the National Consumer Commission (NCC) said.

Which models are affected

The recall covers several BMW model lines: 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3 and X4. All affected vehicles are those equipped with the Pinion Starter.

What can go wrong

The NCC quoted BMW South Africa and the supplier on the fault.

“According to the supplier, due to production-related factors, the affected vehicles may experience increased wear of the solenoid switch after a high number of start operations. As a result, the engine’s starting capability deteriorates,”

The commission added that under certain circumstances the engine may no longer be able to start.

Fire and smoke risk

The NCC also warned of an electrical risk.

“In addition, a short circuit in the solenoid switch cannot be ruled out, which may lead to local overheating at the starter. In such a case, smoke may be visible or noticeable while driving or when leaving the vehicle. BMW AG therefore recommends that the vehicle should not be left unattended after the engine has been started,”

the NCC’s spokesperson, Pheto Ntaba, said.

Interim safety advice for owners

BMW owners affected by the recall are advised to avoid using the remote engine start function through the My BMW App or the remote-control key until repairs are completed.

Next steps and repairs

Consumers are urged to immediately visit their nearest authorised BMW dealership to arrange for an inspection and repair. The NCC said that

“Consumers are urged to immediately visit their nearest authorised BMW dealership to arrange for an inspection and repair. Any corrective work relating to this recall will be carried out at no cost to the consumer,”

according to Ntaba.

The NCC notification and BMW South Africa’s recall apply only to the vehicles and component described above.
