South Africa’s next generation of rugby stars is getting ready to take centre stage again and the early signs suggest the Junior Boks are not taking anything lightly this season.

Head coach Kevin Foote has named a 45-man training squad for a two-week camp in Stellenbosch, laying the groundwork for what could be another big year for the national Under-20 side.

With memories of last year’s world title still fresh, the message is clear. This is about building depth, sharpening combinations, and raising the bar.

Big Squad Signals Serious Intent

The extended squad, which will gather from 6 to 19 April, is larger than usual and that feels deliberate.

Foote is casting a wide net before trimming the group down to 31 players for the upcoming tournament. It gives coaches a chance to test combinations and push players physically before the intensity ramps up in Gqeberha.

Among the standout names are four players who recently experienced the senior Springbok environment. Captain Riley Norton, alongside Siphosethu Mnebelele, Kai Pratt and Markus Muller, all attended the national alignment camp in Cape Town earlier this year.

That exposure matters. It brings a level of professionalism and expectation that often filters through the entire squad.

Injury Comebacks And New Faces Add Depth

There is also a sense of continuity mixed with opportunity.

Hollywoodbets Sharks flyhalf Vusi Moyo has been included despite recovering from hip surgery. While he is unlikely to feature in the tournament itself, his presence in camp allows him to continue rehab under national structures.

Meanwhile, utility back Luan Giliomee adds versatility. Comfortable at both fullback and flyhalf, he brings flexibility that is crucial in tournament rugby.

One notable absentee is Vodacom Bulls wing Cheswill Jooste, who misses out due to club commitments in the United Rugby Championship. It is a reminder of how crowded the South African rugby calendar has become, even at youth level.

Stellenbosch Camp Focus: Fitness And Tempo

The Junior Boks are not just gathering for selection. There is a clear performance focus behind this camp.

Training sessions will be split between field work and gym conditioning, with additional match simulations planned. The squad will face the Sanlam Boland Kavaliers in Wellington and also take part in similar sessions against Eastern Province.

Foote has made it clear that conditioning is a priority. Lessons from last year, especially in Gqeberha, have shaped this approach.

Soft surfaces and demanding match tempo exposed fitness gaps, with players struggling with cramping during key moments. This time, the goal is to ensure the squad can maintain intensity for longer periods.

Lessons From Georgia And The Road Ahead

Preparation for this campaign did not start in Stellenbosch.

A recent tour to Georgia provided valuable game time and a tough test against a physically dominant pack. According to Foote, that experience helped the team grow and highlighted areas for improvement, particularly around set pieces.

But the real challenge lies ahead.

Southern Hemisphere opposition tends to favour a faster, more open style of play. That means more ball in play, quicker transitions, and less room for error.

For a country like South Africa, traditionally known for forward dominance, adapting to that tempo is key if they want to stay ahead of the curve.

All Eyes On Gqeberha

The 2026 Under 20 Rugby Championship will be staged at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, bringing together four rugby powerhouses.

South Africa will face New Zealand, Australia and Argentina in a compact tournament that kicks off on Freedom Day, 27 April, with further rounds on 3 and 9 May.

For local fans, it is more than just a youth competition. It is a glimpse into the future of South African rugby.

And if this expanded squad is anything to go by, the Junior Boks are preparing not just to compete, but to set the standard once again.
