Seven killed in tragic Gqeberha head-on collision on Easter Sunday

Gqeberha’s Easter Sunday celebrations turned grim when a head-on collision on the M17 claimed seven lives. The tragic crash occurred around 3pm between Kwazakhele and Motherwell, leaving families and the community in shock.

A devastating impact

According to Eastern Cape traffic spokesperson Unathi Binqose, a Renault Triber carrying seven passengers collided with a large manganese truck traveling in the opposite direction.

Emergency services arriving on the scene found that all three men and four women inside the car had died instantly. Miraculously, the truck driver survived, though he was treated for trauma and shock.

“All seven occupants of the Renault Triber were declared dead on the scene by emergency services,” Binqose said. “The truck driver survived and received treatment for trauma.”

Investigations underway

Authorities have opened a culpable homicide case at the Swartkops police station while the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in such tragic circumstances. We once again call on all road users to exercise extreme caution, remain patient, and respect the rules of the road.”

A call for caution

This incident serves as a stark reminder of road safety, particularly during high-traffic periods like Easter. In recent years, the Eastern Cape has seen a concerning number of serious crashes along major routes, many involving passenger vehicles and heavy trucks.

Social media in Gqeberha reacted with grief and calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, with many users urging both local authorities and drivers to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Local residents highlight that the M17 corridor is prone to accidents due to its mix of commuter and industrial traffic, especially manganese trucks transporting materials.

Remembering the victims

While details about the identities of the victims have not yet been released, the crash has left a lasting impact on the community. Families and friends are mourning their loss, and local organizations are calling for support for those affected.

As investigators piece together the events leading to the collision, the message from authorities is clear: caution, patience, and adherence to traffic laws are vital to prevent more lives from being lost on South Africa’s roads.
