Eastern Cape ANC Conference Stalls As Membership Records Dispute Deepens

The long-awaited ANC provincial conference in the Eastern Cape is once again in limbo, with growing frustration over missing membership records now casting serious doubt over when, or even if, the gathering will go ahead.

What should have been a routine internal political process has turned into a legal and credibility battle, exposing deeper tensions within one of the ANC’s most influential provinces.

Court-Ordered Records Still Outstanding

At the heart of the delay is a simple but critical issue. The ANC has yet to hand over detailed branch attendance records that were promised in court.

These documents are not just paperwork. They are central to proving whether the party followed its own rules before attempting to host the conference earlier this year.

One of the applicants who challenged the conference, Lwazi Rotya, says the party committed to providing raw electronic attendance data. Instead, legal representatives were reportedly shown spreadsheets that did not meet the court’s requirements.

That gap has only added to the uncertainty.

The conference, initially scheduled for late March, was halted after Rotya and two other members successfully secured an interdict. Since then, progress has been slow, with no clear resolution in sight.

Dispute Over Membership Integrity

Behind the legal wrangling lies a much bigger concern about how membership is managed within the party.

The applicants argue that without verified attendance registers, it is impossible to confirm whether branch meetings were properly held and whether they met quorum requirements. These steps are essential before any provincial conference can legally proceed under ANC rules.

In provinces like the Eastern Cape, where internal party politics often shape national leadership battles, the integrity of membership processes carries serious weight.

Allegations Of Manipulation Raise Stakes

The situation becomes even more sensitive with claims of manipulation within the ANC’s membership system.

Rotya has accused the party of withholding crucial information and raised concerns about practices such as so-called ID harvesting. This involves collecting identity documents to create the impression that meetings took place, even when they may not have.

There are also allegations of ghost members and fabricated branch meetings, issues that have surfaced in past ANC disputes across the country.

While these claims remain contested, they highlight a recurring challenge for the party. Internal processes are often questioned, especially ahead of key conferences where leadership positions are at stake.

A Province That Matters

The Eastern Cape is not just another province on the ANC map. It has historically been a stronghold of the party and a key battleground for internal influence.

Delays in holding a provincial conference do more than disrupt schedules. They stall leadership decisions, delay policy direction at a regional level, and deepen divisions among members.

In a broader South African context, where political trust is already under pressure, disputes like this feed into public concerns about transparency and accountability within major institutions.

What Happens Next

For now, the conference remains on hold, with no confirmed timeline for when it might resume.

Everything hinges on whether the ANC can produce the required records and satisfy the court’s conditions. Until then, the legal process continues to overshadow what should have been a decisive moment for the party in the Eastern Cape.

The longer the delay drags on, the clearer it becomes that this is not just about documents. It is about credibility, internal democracy, and the future direction of the ANC in one of its most important provinces.
