Mpumalanga taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni and three co-accused are due back at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday to continue an application for bail in a case that accuses them of extortion and money laundering.

Who is in court

The accused named in the matter are Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni, Pretoria-based taxi boss Bafana Sindane, Mvimbi Daniel Masilela and Philemon Msiza. The four spent the weekend in custody after the matter was postponed, and Sindane surrendered to police on Friday with his legal representatives before being formally added to the case.

Charges and alleged offending

The group faces charges of extortion and money laundering. According to the case outlined by investigators, they are accused of extorting more than R2 million in “protection fees” from a mining businessman between 2022 and 2025.

Investigations and industry context

Investigators are probing whether the matter is linked to wider criminal activity within the taxi industry. The industry has long been the subject of allegations involving violence, intimidation and organised enforcement structures, the reporting notes.

The article states that Sibanyoni is known to control a fleet of more than 300 taxis in Mpumalanga and that his name has been connected previously to alleged taxi-related violence and to matters involving alleged cartel figure Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala. Despite the allegations, Sibanyoni has denied any wrongdoing.

Legal response

Sibanyoni’s lawyer, former National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, said his client would challenge the accusations and would consider civil action for defamation.

The bail application and related inquiries are set to continue at the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
