According to IOL, a chain of WhatsApp messages has brought alleged covert surveillance equipment into sharp focus at the Madlanga Commission, intensifying scrutiny of suspected criminal networks and their links to law enforcement.

Evidence leader presents chat trail

According to IOL, evidence leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson SC is presenting chats that involve alleged members of the so-called Big Five cartel, the late taxi boss Jonathan “Mswazi” Msibi and suspended Sergeant Fannie Nkosi.

‘Grabbers’ at the centre of the inquiry

According to IOL, the messages appear to discuss the acquisition of sophisticated “grabbers” equipment described in the reporting as capable of covertly intercepting communications.

Matlala’s testimony postponed

According to IOL, testimony by alleged crime boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been postponed until next week. The commission has given Matlala until Saturday to submit a supplementary affidavit.

Matlala’s responses at the hearing

According to IOL, during Monday’s proceedings Matlala repeatedly invoked his right against self-incrimination. The reporting also states that Matlala confirmed that suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi is his friend and acknowledged receiving a R15 million loan from North West businessman Suliman Carrim.

What the commission will examine next

According to IOL, the commission is expected to intensify scrutiny of the relationships, money and alleged surveillance operations that sit at the heart of the probe.
