Two urgent SASSA deadlines you must not miss what to do now
1. Postbank card migration deadline 31 August 2026
All SASSA recipients still using the Postbank Gold Card must switch to the new Postbank Black Card before Monday 31 August 2026, or risk losing access to payments. Postbank has said the deadline will not be extended.
Postbank says the switch is free, requires no paperwork and takes effect immediately. You will need a valid South African ID document to change cards. Card upgrades can be done at Postbank service points inside major retailers such as Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar. Any balance remaining on a Gold Card transfers automatically to the Black Card.
The new Black Card includes benefits Postbank highlights as safety features: three free monthly withdrawals, one free card replacement and a free monthly statement, and protection against unauthorised deductions. For queries, Postbank provides the USSD number *120*355#.
2. Grant lapses after SASSA reviews what happened
After routine review processes, the agency reported that more than 34,000 SASSA grants lapsed in Limpopo before the end of February 2026. SASSA said affected beneficiaries received two notifications before their grants lapsed and that no grants were suspended incorrectly.
SASSA explained that most lapses occur when beneficiaries fail to respond to review notices or update their information in time. Grants may also be suspended where undeclared income is suspected, although SASSA said occasional informal income does not automatically trigger suspension.
Independent reporting by GroundUp found long queues at SASSA offices in Limpopo and said some people reported receiving SMS notices only one day before payments were due a factor linked to the suspensions.
What SASSA is doing to reach beneficiaries
SASSA said it uses mobile teams, SMS alerts and radio broadcasts to reach beneficiaries for reviews, particularly in rural areas.
If your grant has lapsed: immediate steps
SASSA warns that beneficiaries whose grants have lapsed must reapply as new applicants. Critically, SASSA says no backdated payments will be made, even if the applicant qualifies again.
If you did not receive your grant and suspect it has lapsed, visit your nearest SASSA office urgently to rectify the situation. Bring your valid ID and any documents requested in review notices. For help or to report problems contact SASSA:

Bottom line
Two separate issues the Postbank card migration deadline and recent grant lapses after reviews require prompt action from beneficiaries. Switch Postbank cards before 31 August 2026 if you still use a Gold Card, and if your grant has lapsed, contact or visit SASSA immediately to reapply and resolve the interruption.
