At least nine killed in head-on collision on R39

Nine people have died after a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on the R39 highway between Standerton and Morgenzon. The crash occurred on the morning of Thursday, 21 May 2026.

Casualties and injuries

Eight victims died at the scene. A ninth person succumbed to injuries while being transported to a nearby hospital. According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, one person sustained serious injuries, while two others escaped with slight injuries.

Official response and investigation

Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the cause of the collision is not yet clear and that an investigation is under way.

“It is not clear as to what led to the collision; however, reckless and negligent driving could not be ruled out at this stage,” Mmusi said.

Mmusi also said that Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, is sending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

What happens next

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are continuing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision on the R39.
