Head-on crash on R39 between Standerton and Morgenzon kills 10, several injured

At least 10 killed in head-on collision on the R39

Ten people died after a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bus on the R39 between Standerton and Morgenzon on the morning of 21 May 2026, authorities in Mpumalanga said.

What happened

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison confirmed the deaths. Departmental spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the cause of the crash is not yet known, but that “reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out at this stage.” An investigation into the collision is under way.

Casualties and hospital reports

Local officials said nine people were declared dead at the scene and one female was declared dead on arrival at Standerton Hospital. Four people who sustained serious injuries were admitted to Standerton Hospital; the mayor said the four injured include the bus driver and his co-driver.

Official reactions

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Jacie Macie sent condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. Lekwa Local Municipality mayor Sifiso Mngemezulu also expressed condolences to families, relatives and colleagues of those who died.

Warnings for motorists

The mayor reminded motorists that winter conditions can reduce visibility in the early morning hours. He urged drivers to take extra precautions, advising reduced speed and that headlights be used.

“In winter we experience heavy mist that affects visibility in the early morning hours and therefore, must drive with extreme caution, reduced speed and headlights on,” Mayor Sifiso Mngemezulu said.

Investigation ongoing

Authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. No further details about the sequence of events or contributing factors were provided.
