Two Crime Intelligence officers were killed in a shooting ambush in Durban on 30 April 2026, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said. Captain Louis Nel died at the scene and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo later succumbed to gunshot wounds in hospital.

What happened

SAPS said the officers were travelling in an unmarked state vehicle when unknown assailants opened fire. Captain Louis Nel died at the scene, while Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo was taken to hospital and later died from his injuries.

SAPS response and vow for justice

Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane condemned the killings and promised intensified efforts to protect police members and bring the perpetrators to account.

“The loss of Sergeant Khuzwayo is yet another painful reminder of the dangers our members face daily in the execution of their duties. We remain deeply concerned by the targeting of police officers and are intensifying measures aimed at enhancing and improving police safety. We will not rest until those behind this senseless attack are found and prosecuted. A dedicated team remains hard at work following all possible leads,”

Funeral and official condolences

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said Captain Nel’s funeral was held on 8 May 2026 in Durban. The service was attended by the KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Mr Thami Ntuli, and the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, among others.

Mathe also said Lieutenant General Dimpane conveyed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergeant Khuzwayo and reiterated SAPS’ commitment to ensuring those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.

Investigation under way
