Four arrested after violent Heidedal anti‑gang raid; pit bulls and crystal meth seized
Police arrested four people during a volatile anti‑gang operation in Joe Slovo, Heidedal, after officers were attacked by pit bulls and a stone‑throwing mob and a quantity of crystal meth and cash was seized.
Raid on Youth Day morning
Provincial anti‑gang unit members executed a search warrant at a residence in Joe Slovo, Heidedal, at 6.45am on Youth Day, Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said. As the tactical team attempted to gain entry, the homeowner allegedly unleashed pit bull dogs on two police officers.
Mbambo said the officers successfully evaded the potentially fatal dog bites and secured the scene. Upon searching the premises, the operational team discovered and seized a substantial quantity of crystal meth and an undisclosed amount of cash, which were taken as exhibits.
Mob violence and damage to police vehicles
After the homeowner was informed of his arrest, an angry crowd assembled outside and began pelting police with stones, causing significant damage to state vehicles, Mbambo said. Heidedal SAPS members were called to assist, but their response vehicle was also heavily pelted and severely damaged.
To restore public order, protect state property and extract the operational team safely, the anti‑gang unit deployed stun grenades and rubber bullets. Officers secured the crime scene, preserved the seized exhibits and withdrew with four arrested suspects.
Charges and suspects
Mbambo said the suspects, aged between 20 and 51, face various charges including dealing in drugs, malicious damage to property, attack on police and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Two suspects were arrested inside the house: the 45‑year‑old homeowner and a 20‑year‑old male, both charged with dealing in drugs. The homeowner also faces an additional charge of assault with intent to cause GBH for allegedly setting his dogs on officers.
Two other suspects, aged 26 and 51, were arrested for malicious damage to property and assault with intent to cause GBH related to the attack on police and police vehicles.
Response from Police leadership
All four suspects are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court. The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, condemned the attack and said:
“An attack on the police is a direct attack on the authority of the state. Our officers put their lives on the line daily to rid our neighbourhoods of dangerous drugs and violent gangs. It is deeply concerning and entirely unacceptable when community elements choose to shield criminal syndicates by turning heavily on the very police officials working to protect their children and families from the scourge of drug addiction. We will not be intimidated, and we will not retreat. Saps will continue to execute its mandate without fear or favour.”
Investigation continuing
Police spokesperson Mbambo said investigations are continuing.
