Card-replacement push by Postbank
Postbank is running a card migration programme to replace Sassa gold cards with new black cards. The campaign, which began in September 2024, resumed in April 2026 to reach beneficiaries who still hold gold cards.
The bank said the black cards include enhanced security features and can be used immediately across National Payment System channels, including ATMs and retailer point-of-sale devices.
Extended hours and free replacements
To give beneficiaries more opportunities to swap cards before the final cut-off, Postbank opened selected card-replacement counters at participating Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores on Saturday, 6 June, in addition to normal weekday hours. Replacement sites operating under the extended schedule were open from 8am to 5pm.
Postbank emphasised that card replacements are free. Beneficiaries only need to present a valid South African identity document or a temporary ID.
“The extension of our operating days is intended to provide social grant beneficiaries with additional opportunities to access their black cards before the deadline,” said Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thamsanqa Cele.
Deadline and how to find replacement locations
Postbank said the final deadline for switching cards remains 31 August and warned that beneficiaries who fail to replace their cards before then “will not be able to access payments with their old cards, and the deadline will not be extended”.
Beneficiaries looking for participating outlets can visit Postbank’s website or dial 120355# on their mobile phones to find the nearest card-replacement location.
What to expect
With July payouts scheduled in the first two weeks and a concurrent card-replacement drive, beneficiaries should check the Sassa dates that apply to their grant type and, if they still hold a gold card, use the extended services or normal counters to get a black card before the 31 August cutoff.
