A collision between a heavy-tonnage truck and a minibus taxi on the N12 near Comaro Road has closed multiple lanes and left the truck driver fatally injured, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said on Thursday morning.

What happened

JMPD reported that a heavy-tonnage truck and a minibus taxi collided heading west along the N12 near the Comaro Road off-ramp. The truck’s heavy load severely impacted the driver’s cabin area, and emergency services were on scene clearing debris from the large vehicles.

Casualties and response

“Regrettably, the driver of the truck sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene,” said JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla. The driver of the minibus taxi escaped with no injuries, and JMPD said no other injuries have been reported.

Traffic impact and advice

Three lanes were closed by the collision. As of 10am, only one lane was open and authorities warned that debris removal could take several hours, causing lengthy delays in the south of Johannesburg.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area until further notice. JMPD advised westbound drivers to divert well ahead of the Comaro off-ramp and suggested alternative routes:

  • R59
  • South Rand Road
  • Verona Street
  • Rifle Range Road

Ongoing situation

Emergency services continued working to clear the scene and reopen lanes. JMPD extended its deepest condolences to the deceased’s family.
