DIRCO updates evacuation plans and urges expats to register on Travel Smart app
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has updated its evacuation contingency plans as conflict continues in parts of the Middle East, the department said in a response to parliamentary questions.
Who said what
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola provided the update when responding to written questions from MK Party MP Wesley Mzolisi Douglas. Lamola said DIRCO is monitoring the situation closely and that South Africa’s missions remain in contact with registered citizens and are monitoring security conditions on the ground.
“DIRCO continues to monitor closely the escalating conflict.”
What has been updated
According to Lamola, officials have updated contingency plans, reviewed mission readiness and communication systems, and kept the Joint Emergency Evacuation Contingency Committee (JEECC) active to coordinate situational analysis, information-sharing and contingency planning.
The department said it can move quickly if conditions deteriorate.
“Assisted-departure or evacuation procedures can be activated rapidly should the security situation deteriorate further.”
Practical steps for South Africans abroad
Lamola encouraged South Africans in affected countries to register on the DIRCO Travel Smart App. The app allows DIRCO to send alerts and helps officials provide consular support when needed.
Current situation and wider risks
The minister said that, so far, no South Africans have been killed and DIRCO has not received any requests for emergency assistance.
Lamola also told MPs that DIRCO is monitoring the possible economic effects of the conflict, including shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz that could affect fuel prices, fertiliser imports and food security. He said South Africa has raised these concerns in multilateral forums and urged de-escalation.
“South Africa has also reiterated, in relevant UN and multilateral platforms, the importance of de-escalation and adherence to international law to reduce the economic and humanitarian consequences of the conflict.”
What to watch
- Whether the security situation in affected countries deteriorates, prompting activation of assisted-departure procedures.
- Any requests for consular assistance from South Africans abroad received by DIRCO.
