Springboks hand four players dream Test debuts for Wales clash in Durban
Rassie Erasmus has once again backed the depth of South African rugby, naming four new Test debutants in a Springbok side that will take on Wales in Saturday’s Nations Championship clash at Kings Park in Durban, Joburg Etc reports.
Winger Jaco Williams, flyhalf Vusi Moyo, lock Ruben van Heerden and prop Carlu Sadie are all set to earn their first Springbok caps after impressing at franchise level, as Erasmus continues his commitment to exposing more players to Test rugby.
The selection reflects a careful balance between rewarding form and maintaining a competitive team capable of extending South Africa’s impressive run in the competition.
For Sharks duo Williams and Moyo, the occasion will be even more memorable as they make their Test debuts in front of a home crowd in Durban. Van Heerden, who recently left the DHL Stormers for French club Montpellier, and Bordeaux-Bègles prop Sadie complete the quartet of newcomers.
The squad also welcomes back familiar faces. Hooker Andre-Hugo Venter is in line for his second Test appearance after debuting against Portugal in 2024, while scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies returns to the match-day squad for the first time since representing South Africa against Argentina in 2023.
The Springboks will, however, be without several experienced players. Eben Etzebeth, Franco Mostert, Andre Esterhuizen, Canan Moodie, Handré Pollard and Ox Nche were all ruled out as they continue their recovery from injury.
Moyo will take charge at flyhalf alongside experienced scrumhalf Cobus Reinach, while Williams joins Kurt-Lee Arendse and Aphelele Fassi in an exciting back three. Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende provide plenty of experience in midfield.
Up front, Sadie joins Gerhard Steenekamp and Malcolm Marx in the front row, with Van Heerden partnering Cobus Wiese in the second row. Captain Pieter-Steph du Toit once again leads the side, alongside Paul de Villiers and Jasper Wiese in the loose trio.
Erasmus has opted for a five-three split on the replacements bench, with Venter, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Wilco Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon and Marco van Staden covering the forwards. Jantjies, Manie Libbok and Damian Willemse provide the backline options.
Speaking after announcing the squad, Erasmus said the selections were in line with a promise made to his players at the start of the season.
‘We told the players from the start of the season that if everything played out well, we would give everyone in the squad a chance to play in the competition, and we are excited to see what the uncapped players, as well as those who have not been in the mix for a while, bring to the team,’ said Erasmus.
‘This squad shows an exciting mix of youth and experience, and while we are under no illusions about the threat Wales poses, we are looking forward to seeing what these players can do.
‘Wales put up a good fight in their Six Nations matches against Scotland and Ireland, and they defeated Italy in their final match of the tournament. They also beat Fiji in the Nations Championship before going down against Argentina in a competitive match last week, so they are on the rise and will come out with a point to prove this weekend.’
The Bok coach also praised the four debutants, saying they had earned their opportunity through consistent performances and patience.
‘They all played very well for their franchises this season, and have been working extremely hard at training, while waiting patiently for a chance to play, so we are delighted for them.
‘Building squad depth has always been one of our pillars since 2018, and to have such an exciting group of players coming through is fantastic as we continue to build our squad for the future.
‘We have full faith in their abilities, and I’m sure the senior guys around them will assist in keeping them calm on the field, so they can show the talent that earned them a place in the squad. Hopefully, we can make it a memorable occasion for them and our loyal supporters this weekend.’
Saturday’s encounter will also see Pieter-Steph du Toit continue as captain as the Springboks look to build momentum in the Nations Championship while expanding the depth that has become a hallmark of Erasmus’ tenure.
Kick-off at Kings Park is scheduled for 5:40pm.
