Joburg CBD counterfeit goods seized in major operation

As trucks lined the streets of the Johannesburg CBD, officials worked to remove large quantities of suspected counterfeit and illicit goods during a major enforcement operation.

In a video posted by Mogezi Koko on TikTok, several trucks can be seen being loaded with confiscated products while police vehicles remain stationed in the area as the operation continues.

Goods taken for profiling

According to Koko, the seized goods are being transported for profiling, where officials will assess the products and determine their value.

He also states that many of the items are believed to be illicit, meaning they did not go through the normal regulatory processes and protocols. As a result, their safety for human consumption cannot be confirmed.

Several arrests reported

The video also shows a heavy police presence, with roads in the area cordoned off to allow officers to carry out the operation.

Koko says there were hundreds of people in the area, including traders and runners who allegedly purchase products at very low prices before selling them on to consumers who may not realise the goods are counterfeit.

He further claims that several arrests were made during the operation, including individuals who were allegedly found inside the stores without the required documentation, including passports.

At the time of the video, officials were still processing the seized goods, meaning the total value of the confiscated products had not yet been confirmed. Koko noted that the final amount could be significant once the profiling process is complete.
