Attempted CIT heist on Durban N2 fails; guards robbed of firearms and belongings

An attempted cash‑in‑transit robbery on the N2 northbound near the M7 in Durban on Wednesday night, 12 August 2026, ended unsuccessfully for the suspects after they fled the scene, having robbed guards of personal belongings and firearms.

Vehicle left intact, guards robbed

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the CIT vehicle was not bombed. “The vehicle was not bombed. However, the guards were robbed of some of their belongings and firearms,” Jamieson said.

Emergency response and scene security

ALS paramedics attended the scene and reported that no injuries were sustained. Jamieson said the scene was secured by the South African Police Service (Saps) and metro police, and that the freeway was closed for a number of hours to allow investigations to continue.

Suspects fled; investigations ongoing

Jamieson said the suspects had already left by the time emergency services arrived and that an ongoing investigation is continuing.

Context: recent CIT incident in KZN

The report also recalls a separate incident last month in KwaZulu‑Natal in which a South African Police Service officer was wounded during a CIT heist on the N3 near the Sherwood on‑ramp, outside the Durban CBD. Jamieson said paramedics responded to that incident just before 5 pm on Saturday after receiving multiple emergency calls about an explosion on the N3.

“The suspects blew up a cash vehicle on the N3. Paramedics arrived on scene once, given the go‑ahead by Metro Police and Saps to find the money vehicle still engulfed in flames after being detonated by the suspects.” Garrith Jamieson, ALS Paramedics spokesperson

At that scene, paramedics found two security officials who had sustained no injuries and one police officer who had sustained minor injuries; the officer was treated and transported to a nearby hospital.
