Heavy rain has caused localised flooding in Johannesburg, leaving multiple vehicles submerged and stranded as authorities warn motorists to stay off flooded roads.

Flooding was reported at Siemert Road and Currey Street in Doornfontein, where Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers were deployed to assist motorists and divert traffic.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said the flooding occurred at the intersection of Siemert Road and Currey Street, where officers were deployed to manage traffic and assist stranded motorists.

‘Multiple vehicles have become submerged and stuck in high water at this location,’ JMPD said in a traffic advisory issued on Sunday.

JMPD officers were also diverting motorists away from the flooded road and urged drivers to avoid the area entirely where possible.

Motorists encountering submerged roads were warned to “turn around immediately”, as stalled vehicles could obstruct emergency response efforts and pose serious safety risks.

The department urged motorists to drive well below the speed limit, maintain a greater following distance and keep their headlights switched on.

Drivers were also told to follow temporary barricades, road closures and instructions from JMPD officers managing traffic at the scene.

Road users who encounter stranded vehicles, dangerous obstructions or rising water levels can report them to the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Call Centre on 011 375 5911.
