Police trace car stolen at King Shaka to Westville home; two stolen vehicles recovered

A Westville man was arrested on Thursday after police found two stolen cars at his home, one of which investigators say was bought from a dealership using fraudulent documents.

How the case unfolded

Police said the arrest followed information received after the theft of a vehicle at King Shaka International Airport several days earlier. The tip led the Border Policing Reaction Team and detectives attached to the airport to an address in Westville, where a 28-year-old man was apprehended on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.

Vehicles linked to separate incidents

Officers recovered a Toyota and a BMW at the property. Police spokesperson Lt-Col Amanda van Wyk said the BMW had been positively linked to a theft reported at Midrand police station in 2025, more than 500km from Durban, suggesting the suspect could be tied to more than one car theft.

“The Border Policing Reaction Team, together with detectives attached to King Shaka International Airport, followed up on information received following the theft of a motor vehicle at the airport several days ago,” Van Wyk said.

“Further investigations revealed that fraudulent documentation was presented to a motor vehicle dealership to purchase the vehicle,” Van Wyk said.

Next steps

The man is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon. Police said investigations remain ongoing to determine whether he was acting alone and whether he may be linked to a car theft syndicate.
