Gauteng police have opened a murder and attempted-murder investigation after a fatal shooting on the R21 that killed an alleged associate of fired deputy Crime Intelligence boss Feroz Khan and wounded another person.
What happened
The shooting occurred on Monday evening on the R21 in the direction of OR Tambo International Airport. Police said the sequence began when a Fiat reportedly broke down on the highway and the driver called a friend for assistance.
The friend arrived with two other people. As they were attending to the vehicle, shots were fired at the group. The driver attempted to escape the gunfire but lost control of the vehicle and it crashed into a jersey barrier.
The driver sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.
Injuries and survivors
Police said one passenger sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital for treatment, while the third occupant managed to escape unharmed.

Investigation and context
The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made. Police said investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.

Timing with Madlanga Commission appearance
The killing occurred as Feroz Khan was due to give evidence in camera before the Madlanga Commission on Tuesday. Police have not indicated that his appearance before the commission is linked to the shooting.
