Jacob Zuma expected to leave hospital after days of health speculation

Former president Jacob Zuma is expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday after undergoing medical checks and resting, according to a source close to him.

The source told IOL that Zuma was doing well and suggested that exhaustion had contributed to his hospital admission in Pietermaritzburg earlier this week.

“The president is doing fine. He is diabetic and was overworking himself, so he needed to undergo some checks and get some rest,” the source said.

“He was exhausted, but he’s fine and should be discharged today.”

The update follows several days of speculation about the 84-year-old politician’s health, with people close to him pushing back against reports suggesting his condition was more serious than it was.

Zuma’s associates reject claims about his condition

The former president’s hospital admission prompted questions about his health, with reports circulating about the seriousness of his condition.

Sources close to Zuma disputed claims that he was in a critical state. One also challenged reports quoting a person allegedly identified as his brother.

According to the source, Zuma’s last surviving biological brother had died two years ago, meaning the person cited in those reports should not have been presented as his brother.

The source explained that the word “brother” can be used more broadly in South African culture to describe someone who is not a biological sibling.

The comments highlight how descriptions of personal relationships can be misinterpreted when information is reported without sufficient verification, particularly during periods of uncertainty surrounding a public figure’s health.

Government calls for privacy amid rumours

The speculation also drew a response from Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who called for Zuma to be given privacy while questions about his health circulated.

Reports and online discussions about a public figure’s medical condition can spread quickly, particularly when official information is limited. In Zuma’s case, the uncertainty prompted calls to avoid sensational claims about his condition.

Those close to the former president have maintained that the hospital admission was related to medical checks and a need for rest, disputing suggestions that he was critically ill.

Duduzane Zuma says his father is ready to lead

Zuma’s son, Duduzane Zuma, who serves as deputy president of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party), also dismissed reports about his father’s health earlier in the week.

He said the former president was fine and ready to continue leading the party.

The statement comes as Zuma remains a central figure in the MK Party, making news about his health a matter of public and political interest.

For now, the latest update from a source close to him is that he is doing well and is expected to leave hospital on Monday. His anticipated discharge would bring some clarity after several days of speculation, although the information about his condition remains based on statements from people close to him.
