Gauteng residents warned of hot week as temperatures climb into the thirties
Gauteng residents can expect another spell of hot weather this week, with temperatures forecast to climb above 30°C in Johannesburg and Pretoria as summer-like conditions settle over the province.
The warning comes after recent fluctuations between hot and cold weather, with Gauteng Weather forecasting a return to high temperatures.
“Hot week ahead,” the regional weather service said.
Some areas could experience temperatures in the high thirties, making it important for residents to take precautions against the heat.
Johannesburg and Pretoria forecast to heat up
Johannesburg is forecast to record a minimum temperature of 13°C before reaching a high of 31°C on Friday.
Pretoria is expected to be warmer, with temperatures starting at around 15°C and climbing to 33°C on Friday.
The rising temperatures could make outdoor activities uncomfortable, particularly during the hottest part of the day.
Residents urged to take precautions
The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged residents to be cautious during periods of extreme heat.
Residents are advised to drink plenty of water, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, particularly between 11am and 3pm.
High temperatures can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, which may progress to heatstroke if not addressed.
People spending time outdoors should take breaks in shaded or cool areas and pay attention to anyone showing signs of heat-related illness.
Severe thunderstorm warning for Eastern Cape
While Gauteng prepares for hotter conditions, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms over parts of the Eastern Cape, excluding the extreme north-east.
The storms could cause localised damage to settlements and property, along with possible disruptions to electricity supply and communication services.
Extremely high fire danger is also expected in parts of the Northern Cape, the Naledi municipality in North West, the Eastern Cape and the King Cetshwayo District in KwaZulu-Natal.
Heatwave conditions persist in KwaZulu-Natal
The weather service has also warned of a heatwave with persistently high temperatures in north-western KwaZulu-Natal until Tuesday.
Extremely uncomfortable conditions are expected in parts of the southern Eastern Cape.
Residents in affected areas are advised to follow official weather updates and take precautions appropriate to the conditions, particularly where high temperatures coincide with fire risks or severe thunderstorms.
