Elizabeth Moselakgomo murder: Three accused over smartwatch sales
Three men have appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court after allegedly buying and reselling a smartwatch belonging to Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, whose body was discovered in Rhodesfield in September.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Kenneth Chibuzor, Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune and Danial Anthony Moat appeared in court on Monday in connection with the device.
Moselakgomo’s body was found on 12 September 2026, three days after she left her home for her usual afternoon run on 9 September.
According to the prosecution, the smartwatch changed hands several times after she was last seen, with the transactions now forming part of a criminal case linked to the investigation.
Smartwatch allegedly bought for R900 and resold
NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole said the smartwatch was allegedly acquired less than 24 hours after Moselakgomo was last seen before being sold and resold by the accused.
The State alleges that Chibuzor, who operated a second-hand goods shop in Kempton Park, bought the device for R900 from an unidentified person.
Prosecutors claim he failed to obtain and record the identification details and transaction information required under the Second-Hand Goods Act.
Chibuzor allegedly sold the smartwatch to Sekhukhune on 10 September 2026.
The State further alleges that Sekhukhune registered the device to his Gmail account on the same day after the deceased’s profile information and settings had been erased.
Sekhukhune is then accused of selling the smartwatch to Moat for R4,000.
According to the prosecution, Moat later advertised the device on social media and sold it to a fourth individual for the same amount.
The NPA said the fourth individual has not been charged because there is insufficient evidence linking them to the alleged offences.
What charges do the three men face?
The charges differ according to each accused person’s alleged involvement in the transactions.
Chibuzor faces charges relating to alleged contraventions of the Second-Hand Goods Act 6 of 2009, money laundering and theft. Alternatively, he faces charges relating to possession of goods reasonably suspected to have been stolen or receiving stolen property without reasonable cause to believe the seller was entitled to dispose of it.
Sekhukhune and Moat face charges of money laundering and theft, alternatively possession of or receiving stolen property.
The allegations have not yet been proven in court, and the charges do not establish that any of the accused were involved in Moselakgomo’s murder.
When is the next court appearance?
The matter was postponed to 19 October 2026 for Chibuzor’s bail application.
The court also ordered that his immigration status be verified, as he is a Nigerian citizen.
The proceedings follow the police’s earlier announcement that a person had been arrested after allegedly being found in possession of an item belonging to Moselakgomo.
The NPA’s latest update confirms that three accused are now before the court over the alleged transactions involving her smartwatch.
The case is continuing, and the circumstances surrounding Moselakgomo’s death remain a matter of significant public interest.
