Joburg restaurants and Dineplan awards: neighbourhood spots rank well

Joburg’s most celebrated dining rooms are missing from Dineplan’s 2026 Reviewers’ Choice Awards list. The Gauteng restaurants that made it are the ones diners visit on an ordinary Tuesday, Joburg Etc reports.

Gauteng has 17 restaurants on the list. Twelve are in the Top 100 and five are newcomers. The highest-placed is La Vie Lente Bistro & Venue in Tierpoort at 24, and none makes the top 20. Les Créatifs, Marble, Embarc and The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg do not appear.

The Top 10

Here are the 10 restaurants at the top of the Dineplan Reviewers’ Choice Awards 2026, with links to their Dineplan pages:

Nine of the 10 are in the Western Cape. The exception is The LivingRoom at Summerhill in KwaZulu-Natal. Good to Gather and Reverie Social Table also held the top two spots in 2024 and 2025.

Who made the cut

The Gauteng entries lean casual. There is pasta and antipasti at The Italian Job Food Emporium and Lupa Osteria, plus Butcher Boys Meyersdal, Franks Burgers & Ribs, The Sushi Club Neighbourhood and O Peri Peri Edenvale. The Club Como outposts and The Hussar Grill Silverstar Casino also feature.

Why fine dining may sit this one out

There is no panel of critics. The awards draw on more than 357 000 diner reviews, so the ranking reflects the restaurants people enjoy enough to book again.

This part is interpretation. A restaurant someone visits twice a month can collect far more reviews than one saved for an anniversary. Joburg’s special-occasion rooms may simply generate fewer reviews, however good the meal.

Bookings and reviews are different measures. Marble in Rosebank was among Dineplan’s 20 most-booked restaurants of 2025, yet it is absent here. Dineplan has not said why any specific restaurant is missing.

Newcomers to book

Newcomers are venues that joined the platform recently, so they sit outside the Top 100 but have already collected strong diner reviews.

Obento Ramen Bar started as a lockdown catering venture by Daniel Liu and Ling Chiu and moved into a permanent space in 2021. It serves ramen with a 12-hour bone broth and handmade egg noodles in a small Parkmore space, so book ahead.

Ilios is a contemporary Greek and Mediterranean restaurant in Bedfordview, built around shared plates and a charcoal grill.

Karvouno Restaurant is a Greek-inspired charcoal grill where South African seafood and prime steaks are cooked over embers. It shares a Boeing Road East address with Ilios, which makes that corner of Bedfordview a handy double-header.

Club Como Neighbourhood is the newest spot from the team behind Club Como Morningside, which made the 2025 Top 100, according to Dineplan. It sits in Neighbourhood Square in Linksfield.
